    About Banana nutrition

Banana is a fast-growing, long-duration crop (about 11-13 months) with one of the highest nitrogen and potassium requirements of any fruit crop. Fertigation in regular splits through the season gives bigger bunches and better finger filling than a few large soil doses.

    Climate
Tropical humid climate, about 20-35 °C; sensitive to cold and strong winds.
    Soil
Deep, well-drained loam rich in organic matter, pH around 6.0-7.5.

    Stage-wise nutrient management for Banana

What the crop needs most at each growth stage.

    1. Planting & establishment

Phosphorus and organic manure for roots.

    2. Vegetative growth

High nitrogen with potassium for pseudostem and leaf growth; magnesium for leaf health.

    3. Flowering (shooting)

Potassium, calcium and boron for bunch development.

    4. Bunch development

High potassium for finger size, filling and quality.

    Common nutrient deficiencies in Banana

How to recognise them in the field and how they are usually corrected.

    Potassium

    Symptoms

Orange-yellow scorching of older leaves; thin, poorly filled fingers.

    Correction

Potassium fertilizers in regular splits, especially after shooting.

    Magnesium

    Symptoms

Yellowing in the middle of leaf blades while the midrib and margins stay green.

    Correction

Magnesium sulphate through drip or soil application.

    Zinc

    Symptoms

Narrow, pointed young leaves with yellow stripes.

    Correction

    Chelated zinc foliar spray.
