    About Cotton nutrition

Cotton is a major kharif cash crop in India. Shedding of squares and bolls is a key yield loss, and balanced nutrition, especially boron, magnesium and potassium during flowering and boll development, improves boll retention, boll weight and fibre quality.

    Climate
Warm climate, about 21-30 °C, with a long frost-free season and dry weather at boll opening.
    Soil
Deep black cotton soils or well-drained alluvial soils, pH around 6.0-8.0.

    Stage-wise nutrient management for Cotton

What the crop needs most at each growth stage.

    1. Sowing & establishment

Phosphorus and a basal dose of NPK for roots.

    2. Vegetative growth & squaring

Nitrogen in splits; sulphur and zinc where soils are low.

    3. Flowering & boll formation

Boron and magnesium to reduce shedding; potassium for boll growth.

    4. Boll development & opening

Potassium for boll weight and fibre quality; avoid late nitrogen.

    Common nutrient deficiencies in Cotton

How to recognise them in the field and how they are usually corrected.

    Magnesium

    Symptoms

Reddening of older leaves while veins stay green.

    Correction

    Magnesium sulphate foliar spray.

    Boron

    Symptoms

Heavy square and boll shedding, deformed bolls.

    Correction

Foliar boron at squaring and flowering.

    Potassium

    Symptoms

Leaf bronzing and premature leaf fall; small bolls.

    Correction

Potassium fertilizers before and during boll development.
