    About Tomato nutrition

Tomato is one of India's most widely grown vegetables and a heavy feeder. Yield and fruit quality depend on steady nutrition through a long harvest window: phosphorus for early roots, nitrogen for canopy, and potassium, calcium and boron once flowering begins.

    Climate
Warm season crop; grows best at about 18-27 °C. Very high temperatures cause flower drop and poor fruit set.
    Soil
Well-drained loam to sandy loam rich in organic matter, pH around 6.0-7.0.

    Stage-wise nutrient management for Tomato

What the crop needs most at each growth stage.

    1. Transplanting & establishment

Phosphorus-rich nutrition and a basal dose of organic manure for strong root development.

    2. Vegetative growth

Nitrogen with balanced potassium for healthy canopy; magnesium to keep leaves green.

    3. Flowering & fruit set

Calcium and boron for flower retention and fruit set; reduce nitrogen to avoid excess foliage.

    4. Fruit development & harvest

High potassium for fruit size, colour, firmness and shelf life; continue calcium.

    Common nutrient deficiencies in Tomato

How to recognise them in the field and how they are usually corrected.

    Calcium

    Symptoms

Blossom-end rot: dark, sunken patches at the bottom of fruits.

    Correction

Calcium nitrate through drip or foliar calcium sprays; maintain even irrigation.

    Boron

    Symptoms

Flower drop, poor fruit set and cracked or misshapen fruits.

    Correction

Foliar boron spray before and during flowering.

    Magnesium

    Symptoms

Yellowing between veins on older leaves while veins stay green.

    Correction

Magnesium sulphate through drip or as a foliar spray.

    Potassium

    Symptoms

Leaf edges scorch; uneven ripening and blotchy fruit colour.

    Correction

Potassium-rich water-soluble fertilizers during fruit development.
